The Durango area is well known for
offering some of the best hiking this country has to offer. With the mountains
surrounding the town, we are fortunate to have extensive trail systems. From
beginner hikes to more technical challenges, we have it all.
Yet, unknown to many is the fact that
these trails require upkeep and maintenance, and much of this work relies on
volunteers. Trails 2000, a local nonprofit 501c3 organization, diligently
maintains the trails in and around Durango. They maintain hiking, biking, and
horse trails. Since 1989, they have been impacting the Durango area. The
organization began as a partnership between the USFS and BLM, and Private
Sector.
They provide updates on trail
conditions, so their website is a great resource to check prior to
hiking. In addition, they educate on trail etiquette, which is a great
reminder for all ages. Check out their website for some practical tips when on
the trails.
The organization hosts volunteer
trail work days and evenings. Oftentimes, no experience is necessary, and they
will even provide food for the event. What a great way to meet new people and
contribute to the community!
Trails 2000 also offers education for
youth, which exposes them to the trail systems and gives greater ownership and
understanding of our local outdoors.
As we head into the fall season, we
still have a lot of time left this year to enjoy the trails in our area. We are
grateful for the work that Trails 2000 and all of the volunteers do to maintain
our ability to enjoy the outdoors.
